What is a Christian?
|
|
Christians are people who have personally committed their lives to
follow Jesus Christ. Christians are not perfect people; they still
struggle with the problems experienced in life. But the key is that
Christians do so in partnership with the God who made them, with His
presence, power and peace. |
 |
God's Purpose
|
|
God
loves us and has a purpose for our lives. The Bible states it this way:
|
| |
For God so loved the
world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in
him shall not perish but have eternal life
(John 3:16).
|
God's
purpose is that we have eternal life, not only a full and meaningful
life right now (John 10:10, but the promise of eternity with God in
heaven (John 14:3) as well.
|
God's Provision For Our
Need
|
|
As we search for meaning
in life, we discover that our sin (those attitudes and actions that
separate every person from God) keeps us from fulfilling God's purpose
for our lives. We are all sinners by nature and by choice: for all
have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
(Romans 3:23).
|
Because
God loves us, He desires to forgive us for the sin that separates us
from Him. He provided that forgiveness through the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Jesus said,
I am the way and the
truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me
(John 14:6).
|
Our Response
|

|
Yet to all who received him, to
those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of
God
(John 1:12). The only way Jesus
can change our lives is for us to receive Him. When we turn from our
sin and turn to God, when we place our faith in Jesus, when we surrender
control of our lives to Jesus as our Lord, He comes into our lives. He
brings forgiveness and the promise of eternal life.
|
If you understand your own need for
God's forgiveness and if you are willing to commit your life to Jesus
Christ, you might express your faith to God in words like these:
|
| |
Dear Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God and that you died to
forgive me of my sins. I know I have sinned, and I ask you to forgive
me. I turn from my sins and receive you as my Lord and Savior. I want
you to be in control of my life. I trust my life into your hands.
Thank you for saving me.
|
If that
prayer expresses your desire, why not receive Jesus Christ into your
life right now? A Christian is someone who has done that.
